Scarce Elgin “Avigo 426” men’s Art Deco design wristwatch in chromium nickel, circa 1929.

Aviation was all the rage in the rage in the late 1920s, and Elgin introduced a series of aviation-themed watches to capitalize on the aviation craze. The “Avigo 426” has an Air Corps specification dial with large numerals and the winged Avigo logo. It has a cushion-shaped case with Art Deco engravings in the corners, inlaid with black highlighting. It was priced at $23.00 in 1929. This example is in excellent condition, showing only a very minor amount of wear to the chromium plating. Caseback is very good and unengraved, with some shallow dents and some moderate pitting. Case measures 35mm long and 30mm wide. Refinished dial is excellent. Has new glass crystal. The watch is powered by its correct 7-jewel Elgin grade 485 manual wind movement, just serviced and running strong.
