Scarce Elgin “Avigo 428” men’s Art Deco design wristwatch in chromium nickel, circa 1931.

Aviation was all the rage in the rage in the 1930s and Elgin introduced a series of aviation-themed watches to capitalize on the aviation craze. The “Avigo 428” has an Air Corps specification dial with large numerals and the winged Avigo logo. It has a cushion-shaped case with Art Deco stylized wings engraved on the bezel, with black inlay. It was priced at $22.50 in 1931. This version of the "Avigo" is very scarce and this is the first I have offered in many years. This example is in excellent condition showing only very faint scratching to the chromium plating. Caseback is fair, with some pitting and wear through to the underlying nickel base. Case measures 37mm long and 30mm wide. Refinished dial is superb. Has new glass crystal. The watch is powered by its correct 7-jewel Elgin grade 485 manual wind movement, just serviced and running strong.
