Scarce Elgin “Avigo 426” men’s Art Deco design wristwatch in chromium nickel, circa 1931.

Aviation was all the rage in the rage in the 1930s and Elgin introduced a series of aviation-themed watches to capitalize on the aviation craze. The “Avigo 426” has an Air Corps specification dial with large numerals and the winged Avigo logo. It has a cushion-shaped case with Art Deco engravings in the corners, inlaid with black highlighting. It was priced at $22.50 in 1931. This example is crisp, excellent condition showing no wear to the chromium plating, just some light scratches. All of the alternating frosted and polished finishes are intact. Caseback is excellent and unengraved, with only a tiny amount of pitting along one edge. Case measures 35mm long and 30mm wide. Original new old stock dial is superb, has restored vintage-style luminous, as do the hands. Has new glass crystal. The watch is powered by its correct 7-jewel Elgin grade 485 manual wind movement, just serviced and running strong.
