Rare Longines “Platinum Jubilee” men’s Retro Modern design diamond dial presentation wristwatch in solid platinum, circa 1950.
Longines offered this model in 14K gold, palladium, and platinum. The case was made by the boutique casemaker of Kaspar & Esh of New York City, which operated the American division of Longines at the time. The watch was priced at $500.00 in 1950. This is a Longines-signed, genuine factory-cased watch, not an aftermarket jeweler-cased watch. This watch appears to have been presented to Pittsburgh steel magnate and modern art collector G. David Thompson by Allegheny County judges Samuel A. Weiss and Henry X. O'Brien. It is in crisp, excellent condition showing almost no wear. Caseback is superb, with an ornate presentation engraving. The case measures 40mm long and 21mm wide. Refinished dial is superb, has 17 genuine, high-quality diamonds. Has new crystal. This watch is powered by its correct 17-jewel Longines grade 9L manual wind movement, just serviced and running strong.
