Scarce Gruen "Pan American Import" men’s Military design wristwatch in steel, circa 1944.

The Gruen “Pan American” was originally produced starting in 1943 exclusively for Pan American Airways pilots during World War II. The “Pan American” watches were released for public sale beginning on October 1, 1945 and by that time were being advertised as the official watch of Pan American World Airways. This early example is in an all-steel (Guildite) case, imported as a complete watch from Switzerland. Most other Pan Americans were sold in American-made cases. This example is in excellent condition showing only very light wear. The bezel shows much of its original brushed finish. Caseback is excellent, with some light scratches. The case measures 38mm long and 32mm wide. Original two-tone black and silver 24-hour dial is very good, with some slight fading and light marks. Acrylic crystal is excellent. This watch is powered by its correct 17-jewel Gruen grade 420SS manual wind movement, just serviced and running strong.
