Very scarce Hamilton "Otis" men's Streamline Moderne design men's wristwatch in 14K yellow gold fill, circa 1938.
The "Otis" features the reverso concept which allows the dial portion of the watch to flip over for protection against impacts. Hamilton obtained a license from the reverso patent-holder LeCoultre to produce and sell reverso watches in the United States, and paid a 60-cent royalty to LeCoultre through the casemaker Schwab & Wuischpard for each case produced. This is the initial version with the 980 movement, introduced in 1938 and priced at $65.00. It is in excellent condition just a very faint line of wear along the top edge of the ribbed bezel and a few tiny specks of brassing to the tips of the lugs. The flip side of the center case has a discreet Art Deco monogram. Outer caseback is superb. Case measures 40mm long and 24mm wide. Original black nickel-finish gilt dial is very good with some patina, has solid 18K gold applied numerals. Has new glass crystal. The watch is powered by its correct 17-jewel Hamilton grade 980 manual wind movement, just serviced and running strong.
