Hamilton 1st Generation Square Engraved 14K

Very rare Hamilton “First Generation Square Engraved” men’s Art Deco design wristwatch in solid 14K white gold, circa 1927.

This first version of the "Square" is known to collectors as the "First Generation Square" and is very rare with an engraved bezel. It was produced for only a few months in early 1927 until Hamilton announced on June 16, 1927 that it was replacing it with what it called the "New Square" with some changes to the case design. That new version with the flared sides is now known to collectors as the "Second Generation Square." This watch has all the diagnostic hallmarks of the "First Generation" models... flush case sides, subtle ridge around the bezel and caseback edges, engine-turned Hamilton caseback signature, and circular indentions inside the bezel and caseback rims as the contact points to the center casebody. This example is in excellent condition showing only very light wear. Caseback is excellent and unengraved, with the correct "7" suffix beneath the serial number denoting the case accomodates the 987 movement instead of the 986A movement. Serial numbers match on all 3 case pieces. The case measures 36mm long and 28mm wide. Refinished dial is superb. Has new glass crystal. Watch is powered its correct 17-jewel Hamilton grade 987 manual wind movement, just serviced and running strong. The movement serial number indicates production around March of 1927.
