Very scarce Elgin “Avigo 461” men’s Art Deco design wristwatch in 14K white gold fill, circa 1930.
Aviation was all the rage in the 1930s and Elgin introduced a series of aviation-themed watches to capitalize on the aviation craze. The “Avigo 461” has an Army Air Corps specification dial with large numerals and the winged Avigo logo. It has a cushion-shaped case with incuse lines with black inlay in each bezel corner. It was priced at $40.00 in 1930. Unlike the other Avigo models which had chrome cases and 7-jewel movements, the "Avigo 461" has a gold-filled case with Elgin's highest grade 17-jewel 4/0-size movement, which accounted for it being priced twice as much as the chrome models. This example is in crisp, excellent condition with no brassing. Caseback is superb and unengraved. Case measures 37mm long and 30mm wide. Original dial is very good. Has new glass crystal. The watch is powered by its correct 17-jewel Elgin grade 487 manual wind movement, just serviced and running strong.
Price $425. SOLD
