Very scarce Elgin “Avigo 475” men’s Art Deco design wristwatch in chromium nickel and rolled gold plate, circa 1932.
Aviation was all the rage in the 1930s and Elgin introduced a series of aviation-themed watches to capitalize on the aviation craze. The “Avigo 428” has an Army Air Corps specification dial with large numerals and the winged Avigo logo. It has a cushion-shaped case with Art Deco stylized wings engraved on the bezel highlighted with black inlay. It was priced at $22.50 in 1932. The watch is in excellent condition showing only very light wear, but no pitting or corrosion to the chromium plating. Caseback is excellent unengraved. Case measures 37mm long and 30mm wide. Factory-original new-old-stock dial is superb, has new vintage-style luminous. Has new glass crystal. The watch is powered by its correct 7-jewel Elgin grade 485 manual wind movement, just serviced and running strong.
