Very scarce Hamilton “Vancott” men’s Streamline Moderne design wristwatch in solid 10K yellow gold and stainless steel, circa 1946.
Not shown in any of Hamilton’s regular catalogs, some internal factory information indicates the “Vancott” was originally proposed during World War II as an officer’s model wristwatch, but its release was delayed until after the war ended. With its solid gold bezel and steel caseback, the “Vancott” was the first Hamilton to use two dissimilar metals in its case composition. Hamilton factory records show that 2,918 were produced, but there is also information indicating that far fewer were actually released for sale. This is the first example I have offered in many years. Usually seen with an applied gold numeral dial, this example has an extraordinary factory-original black satin finish dial. It is in excellent condition showing only light wear and some light marks. Lower right lug is correctly marked “10K” on the underside. The steel caseback is excellent and unengraved. The case measures 35mm long and 29mm wide. Factory-original black satin finish dial is superb. Has new acrylic crystal. The watch is powered by its correct 17-jewel Hamilton grade 987S hacking manual movement, just serviced and running strong.
