Lord Elgin “Direct Reading 7775” men’s Retro Modern design jump hour wristwatch in 14K yellow gold fill, circa 1956.
Most collectors refer to this model of Elgin’s “Direct Reading” watch as the “Chevron” model because of the prominent raised chevron or boomerang fin on the bezel. It features an early use of the digital concept, with two rotating disks displaying the time through a window in the case, with the hour disk jumping at the top of each hour. This is the earliest version with the 21-jewel movement, and was priced at $75.00 in 1956. It is in crisp, near mint condition with no brassing, just a few light marks. This example is unusual in that there is no wear to the sharp point of the chevron. The lower part of the bezel still shows traces of its brushed finish. Caseback is excellent and unengraved. The case measures 38mm long and 32mm wide. Original rotating dial disks are excellent. Glass crystal is superb. This watch is powered by its correct Elgin 21-jewel grade 719 manual wind movement, just serviced and running strong with the hour jumping crisply. Has fantastic period-correct Speidel yellow gold-filled hinged link and expansion link bracelet with red acrylic inserts in excellent condition. I can replace the bracelet with a leather strap for a lower cost.
Price $750. SOLD
