Central American Republic 1839 8 Reales Silver, PCGS AU-50

Large 8 Reales in silver from the Central American Republic, a loose federation of former Spanish colonies in Central America formed in the early 1820s. Almost always on the brink of collapse due to warfare, the federation barely limped into the 1840s. It issued some beautiful and distinctive coins featuring the sun rising behind 5 volcanoes on the obverse and the Ceiba tree of liberty on the reverse. This example has a pleasing deep gun-metal gray coloration and a crisp strike, and shows just the slightest bit of wear from circulation.  This example was struck at the main mint in Nueva Guatemala, and was authenticated and graded Almost Uncirculated (AU-50) by PCGS (Certificate #83591584). Original mintage unknown.
